Collaboration of 50 million users, and the processing
power of their computers enable balancing the load of
the internet !
Haifa, Israel, July 20, 2002 - SpeedBit
Ltd. announced today that 50 million users have
registered for Download Accelerator Plus (DAP),
its popular platform for delivery of rich media content
over the Internet, since the program was first introduced
in late 1999.
DAP enhances reliable delivery of software, music,
games, movies and videos over the Web, speeding the
process by 200% to 400% according to users' comments
and professional reviews. DAP's 'organic
growth' is driven strictly by word of mouth and user
recommendations, resulting in over 60,000 users who
opt-in and register the program every day.
DAP's delivery platform is used extensively by
its vast user base, delivering over 9 million files
daily. The program has consistently been ranked among
CNET's top PC downloads for the past two years, further
evidence of DAP's popularity. DAP may
be freely downloaded from the SpeedBit website
(www.speedbit.com).
How DAP works
On the Internet the same file is often
hosted on numerous mirror sites, such as at universities
and on ISP servers. DAP immediately senses when
a user begins downloading a file and identifies available
mirror sites that host the requested file.
As soon as it is triggered, DAP's client side
optimization begins to determine - in real time - which
mirror sites offer the fastest response for the specific
user's location. The file is then downloaded simultaneously
through multiple connections from the most responsive
server(s). This ensures that each available mirror server
is utilized to serve the users that most benefit.
This in turn effects an efficient balancing of the
load among available servers across the entire World
Wide Web, and reduces download times for users while
allowing them to receive maximum benefit from their
available bandwidth. DAP's Resume functionality
and the ability to continue downloading even when one
of the participating connections has dropped also provides
users with a more reliable download experience.
Distributed computing enables load balancing through
DAP's user base
"DAP architecture extends the delivery
optimization chain to the true edge of the network -
the user's PC," said SpeedBit's Co-founder
and CTO Idan Feigenbaum.
"DAP's client-side optimization performed
from our users PCs, demonstrates distributed computing
for load balancing of the whole Internet. The more globally
spread DAP's user base, the more effective
the balancing process," added Feigenbaum.
DAP's new version 5.3, released a few weeks ago,
preserves SpeedBit's innovative position and
high retention of DAP's user base, "We released
DAP 5.3 with a set of functionality and usability
related improvements, features like the Zip files preview
allow users to check the content of Zip files before
downloading them. They can extract only the desired
content, thereby saving time and bandwidth. To improve
the user experience, we added skins support that allows
our users to brighten-up the interface of their frequently
used application. Some of these features are only enabled
in DAP Premium (registered version)," Feigenbaum
said.
